HELP RESTORE THE WETLAND AREA ALONG THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH PORTAGE BAY SHORELINE.

Friends of South Portage Bay/Montlake Waterfront Park welcome volunteers from the surrounding Seattle area and especially UW students interested in restoration projects. If you like fresh air and the great outdoors and want to do something positive to help improve the environment, please join our work party.

We meet on the second Saturday of each month, plant natives trees and shrubs,  remove invasives such as English Ivy and Himalayan Blackberry, and plan the future of this wonderful wetland habitat.  This summer will also be concentrating on watering about 1500 new plants.  It’s a great place to bring your binoculars if you like birding, we have sighted hawks, bald eagles, great blue heron, a myriad of ducks and shorebirds, killdeer, woodpecker, etc.  There are a couple of resident beavers that are very busy making their lodges in the area.  We are working with the Green Seattle Partnership to help the city of Seattle meet its goal of creating a livable city by re-establishing and maintaining 2500 healthy acres of forested parklands by 2025.  We have about 5 acres that need your help.

It’s a good idea to wear hiking boots or sturdy shoes, long pants, and a layer of clothing with long sleeves.   Tools and gloves provided.

The park is located behind the Four Season's Apartments off of Boyer Ave. East on 15th East which dead ends at the park.  (Boyer Ave East is intersected on the east end by Eastlake Ave. E., and intersected on the west end by 24th Ave. E.)   The park site is located in the Portage Bay/Roanoake and Montlake neighborhoods, just west of the Montlake Playfield.

From I-5 heading South take the Roanoke Exit, cross over the freeway, continue through 2 traffic lights, down the hill on Del Mar Drive to the traffic island, turn left proceed 1-1/2 block  turn right onto 15th Ave E, (dead end) to parking lot at park site.

From I-5 heading North, take the Lakeview exit, turn left, bear left onto Boylston Ave. E under the freeway and continue along the freeway sound wall to the Roanoke Ave. E. Signal, turn right, continue straight ahead through 2 traffic lights,  follow street (becomes Del Mar Drive) down the hill to the traffic island, turn left,  proceed 1-1/2 block  turn right onto 15th Ave E, (dead end) to parking lot at park site.

Call if you need further directions: 328-4135 or 322-9293.
